High fire danger in WI has DNR warning "it's the most dangerous time to burn"

DOVER (WITI) -- All of southeast Wisconsin is under a 'High Fire Danger' warning from the state DNR. For most of us, it is illegal to burn on your property. But that hasn't stopped people, there have been a number of brush fires.

At least two more brush fires occurred on Friday, May 1st, in southeast Wisconsin. Most have been caused by people doing something illegal.

Outside of Dover, in Racine County, Emily Binkowski is surrounded by animals -- but they are not hers.

For the last week, Binkowski has been farm-sitting.

There has been surprises, like baby sheep. But catching her more off guard with what happened at the neighbors.

"There is the brown of the weeds, and then there is little stubbles of tree, and then there is a black patch back there," Said Binkowski.

Black earth marks where a grass fire broke out Friday afternoon -- thanks to a neighbor burning brush.

"They're burning it, a little bit of wind. Kicks up some derbies, starts the marsh on fire," said Kansasville Fire Chief, Scott Remer

Chief Remer says they could have lost acres of land if the wind went in a different direction.

"It is probably the most dangerous time to burn during the year only because everything that dried up all winter long is now very vulnerable to fire," said Chief Remer.

The tiny volunteer fire department has already handled a dozen brush fires this year. Most caused by people doing something against the law, burning brush during 'High' fire warnings.

"They panicked a little bit. She admitted, very nice people understood it was dangerous and they maybe shouldn't have burned today," said Chief Remer

Friday, fire officials handed out a warning and a lesson in fire safety. They're getting a big thank you for someone who knows a thing or two about lending a helping hand.

"Good to know the fire department got it under control, and they're looking out for us," said Binkowski.

Generally speaking, if there is a high fire warning, like there is now, it is illegal to burn. Down in Dover, fines can run into the hundreds.

It's going to be a nice weekend, but hold off on burning your brush.
