Firefighters, Red Cross officials respond to fire at apartment building on city's East Side

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Fire officials were called out to an early morning fire at an East Side apartment building.

It happened Monday, May 4th -- and fire officials believe it started on the second floor of a three-story apartment building located in the 2100 block of Summit Avenue.

The call came in when smoke was spotted -- shortly before 10:00 a.m.

No injuries were reported.

Fire officials haven't announced an official cause of the fire, but they do not believe it to be suspicious.

We're told there was heavy damage in one apartment unit, but fire officials say everything inside should be able to be reclaimed. A damage estimate hasn't been released -- but we're told there was some damage (water and smoke) to the units above and below the unit that was directly affected.

The American Red Cross responded to this fire -- and a Red Cross spokeswoman says three units were directly affected. The Red Cross provided financial assistance for one person, but that person is staying with a friend. Red Cross officials are going to be reaching out to the tenant living in the unit where the fire occurred to see what that person may need.

Power has been restored to the building.
