World War II veteran Glenn Elste receives some overdue awards for his service

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- A local World War II veteran is getting some overdue honors for his service.

Glenn Elste was in General Patton's Third Army through four campaigns in Europe.

On Tuesday, May 5th, he was awarded the Bronze Star, the French Liberty Medal and the French Legion of Honor.

The honor comes after a current military member heard his story after Elste told it to the oral library in Madison. He then paid a visit to Mr. Elste.

"I think you are eligible for the Bronze Star. Oh yeah? What did I do? I did what everybody else did," Elste said.

Elste grew up and lived in Chicago before moving to Germantown after the war.

Besides the awards he received Tuesday, Elste was already awarded five other medals for his service during WWII -- including a Purple Heart.
