Salute to service: Thousands of American flags placed at graves in Wood National Cemetery

WOOD NATIONAL CEMETERY (WITI) -- There is a massive undertaking going on at Wood National Cemetery this weekend.

American flags will be placed at more than 34,000 graves at the cemetery -- it's part of a Memorial Day tradition.

Bill Janowski, the foreman at Wood National Cemetery, says he is thankful his four-man crew gets a lot of help placing the flags at the gravesites. He says volunteers from organizations like the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts show up to help. Also playing a role, volunteers from the VFW, groups from businesses, as well as students from elementary schools and high schools.

Janowski says when the younger generation is helping place the flags at the graves, they are encouraged to take their time and read the names on the headstones. He wants them to realize how young some of the veterans were when they gave their life for their country.

After Memorial Day, Janowski says every single one of the flags placed in the cemetery will be pulled and checked to make sure they are dry before they are stored for next year's Memorial Day.
