"Win or lose it's always fun:" Glide into some roller derby action at the 6th Annual BrewHaHa

MILWAUKEE -- Before soccer and lacrosse gained popularity in the United States, there was a sport whose contact and colorful characters attracted large audiences -- roller derby.

This weekend, Milwaukee played host to the 6th Annual BrewHaHa Roller Derby Tournament at the UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena.

This sport is not for the weak, or the meek -- the game is a full contact, no guts, no glory type of sort.

"Sometimes you see them crash really hard and how do they get back up from that? But they always seem to," said Janet Plombon , roller derby spectator.

One skater on each team, called a 'jammer,' tries to pass the other team's skaters to earn points while the others block and clear the path.

Players love the physical aspect of the game but it's truly about the camaraderie.

"It's unbelievable how strong the community is," said Nicole 'VerucAssault' Armendariz, Brewcity Bruisers.

The 6th Annual BrewHaHa Roller Derby Tournament is hosted by the hometown team, the Brewcity Bruisers.

29 of the world's best roller derby teams are here in Milwaukee competing in 44 bouts throughout the weekend.

"Win or lose it's always fun," said Mo 'Quadzilla' Sanders, with Seattle Puget Sound Outcast.

Mo Sanders, known as 'Quadzilla' on the track, loves coming to the Midwest BrewHaHa.

"That track is super fast, it doesn't look like it but we love coming to skate on this floor," said Sanders.

He's skated all his life and says these games are where he finds himself.

"Whether I'm losing or winning, it's having fun, so as long as I get to skate I'm having a good time," said Sanders.

And in this game, it's all about the fun.

The tournament continues Sunday, June 7th with bouts beginning at 8 a.m. and running through the evening.
