32-year-old Elkhorn man dies in crash after running out of gas, and then allegedly fleeing police

WALWORTH COUNTY -- Police say a 32-year-old Elkhorn man was killed in a crash in Elkhorn on Sunday night, August 2nd after running out of gas in his vehicle, and then allegedly fleeing the scene after police showed up.

Police say Daniel Krueger was flagging down passing motorists on Highway 11, west of County Highway F and Briggs Road in Elkhorn on Sunday night.

A passing motorist called 911 -- and because the Town of Delavan Police Department was busy with storm damage and related calls, the call was sent to Elkhorn police.

An Elkhorn police officer responded and found that a Good Samaritan had stopped and provided Krueger with some gasoline for his car.

The Good Samaritan then left the scene.

The police officer spoke with Krueger and then went to his squad car to check the vehicle's registration when the Krueger fled the scene in his vehicle -- heading east on Highway 11 to Highway F/Briggs Road -- turning north onto Briggs Road.

It is estimated Krueger's vehicle reached speeds of 90 miles-per-hour.

Near the intersection of Briggs Road and Hazel Ridge Road, Krueger's vehicle crashed into a berm, and the vehicle caught fire.

Krueger was killed.

The Elkhorn Fire Department was called out to the scene to extinguish the fire.

The Walworth County Medical Examiner's Office was called out to the scene to investigate the death.

The Wisconsin State Patrol was dispatched to take part in accident reconstruction and investigate the crash, along with the Walworth County Sheriff's Department.
