American Family Insurance receives exemption from FAA to use drones after disasters

MADISON -- American Family Insurance is taking to the sky to test a new approach to catastrophe response.

The Madison-based insurance company received an exemption from the FAA to use drones. Current FAA restrictions prevent the commercial use of drones.

The company will use drones to inspect and take photos and video of damage after a disaster.

American Family Insurance plans to begin testing in the fall in Madison.

The exemption is approved until July 2017.
