MILWAUKEE — A 22-year-old Milwaukee man died during surgery at Froedtert Hospital after he shot himself in the thigh Friday morning, August 21st.

Timothy Phonisay was pronounced dead around 1 a.m. Officials say he accidentally shot himself in the right thigh in his home near 44th and Keefe.

According to the Medical Examiner’s report,  Phonisay was apparently posing with a handgun and when he went to holster it, a round was fired and entered his right groin area.

Phonisay sustained two penetrating wounds to the right thigh. There was no bullet recovered or found on x-ray, according to the Medical Examiner’s report.

Authorities say Phonisay developed respiratory distress during surgery, at which time blood was found in the chest. A right-sided thoracotomy was performed and a significant amount of blood was removed through a chest tube.  Doctors were unclear where this blood came from, as no other injuries were identified.

The Medical Examiner’s report states that Phonisay’s cardiac status declined and staff was unable to keep up with the amount of blood loss. Phonisay was pronounced dead just before 1 a.m.  His death was ruled an accident.

Milwaukee police were on scene investigating.

“his death was ruled an accident”. No, his death was due totally to his STUPIDITY. At least be honest about that.

  • Scream

He died from a central line that went into his chest instead of his vein. Doesn’t sound like he died directly from the leg wound.

His death was not due to “STUPIDITY” which is what obviously some of you people possess because in your heart you believe everything you read on social media. This man died by freak accident. This type of caliber pistol is known for having a negligent discharge, it’s not uncommon for this type incident to happen. Law enforcement, military personnel all have experience a situation similar with this type of gun, some were lucky, some weren’t. This could’ve happened to ANYONE, no matter how properly you were trained. The gun most likely got snagged on a piece of clothing or the holster itself which caused the discharge. “DO YOUR RESEARCH, BEFORE LEAVING “STUPID” COMMENTS.

“This type of caliber pistol is known for having a negligent discharge”
That sentence does not make any sense.

“This man died by freak accident.”

No. This is not a “freak accident,” and is easily preventable by 1) keeping one’s finger outside of the trigger guard and 2) holstering carefully to ensure that nothing else comes inside the trigger guard. If those two steps are followed the gun will not fire.
