BloodCenter of Wisconsin to say 'thank you' to donors with $10 prepaid gas cards

MILWAUKEE -- As the Labor Day holiday approaches, BloodCenter of Wisconsin is asking the community to save the day for patients in need by donating blood. As a small token of thanks for their life-saving gift, everyone who attempts to donate at community blood drives and donor centers from Monday, August 31st, through Monday, September 7th, will receive a $10 prepaid gas card.

The cards will be mailed to blood donors within three weeks of their donation.

Blood donations typically decrease over busy holiday weekends as individuals are focused on travel and events, and fewer school and community drives are held. But the need is constant. By donating during the week leading up to Labor Day, donors can help patients in their local communities and beyond — premature babies, people who are fighting cancer or victims of trauma. Whatever the need, patients rely each day on the generosity of blood donors.

Schedule an appointment at a nearby donor center or community blood drive by calling 1-877-BE-A-HERO (1-877-232-4376) or visiting www.bcw.edu.

Susan Martinez of Waukesha was pursuing a degree in criminal justice when she noticed a pea-sized lump on her collar bone. Ten days later came the startling news that she had cancer. Many blood and platelet transfusions from generous donors helped Martinez endure months of chemotherapy — and gave her the strength to continue her studies. She’s now a college graduate, looking ahead to the future she deserves.

To the donors who helped her, Martinez says, “Thank you for giving me life.”

Anyone 16 or older who is in general good health and meets eligibility requirements is encouraged to donate blood. Parental consent is required for 16-year-olds to donate. Donors should bring a photo ID that includes birth date. The entire process takes about an hour.
