Loved ones to remember children killed in fire; report shows they may have been trying to help their mom

MILWAUKEE -- A report from the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office sheds new light on how two children were not able to make it out of a house fire on Friday morning, September 4th. According to the report, the two children may have just been trying to help their mother.

The fire broke out just after 2 a.m. near Swan and Allyn on Milwaukee's northwest side. 11-year-old MaKayla and her six-year-old brother, Marwaun Myles were not able to escape. After crews put out the flames, MaKayla was found in a second floor bedroom and Marwaun was in the same bedroom, hiding in a closet.

Investigators say the children's mother, Natasha Jones, woke up in the middle of the night to a crackling noise. She thought someone might have been trying to break into the house, but when she went down the stairs she saw fire.

Authorities say Natasha also saw six-year-old Marwaun in the kitchen, filling up a pot with water.

In the report, it states that Natasha took Marwaun outside and went back upstairs to get her two other children -- an infant and 11-year-old MaKayla. After walking back into the home, Natasha realized Marwaun had followed her.

Both Marwaun and MaKayla were then told to follow their mom, and the baby she was carrying, back outside -- but they didn't.

According to investigators, neighbors saw Natasha running out of the house with the baby and she realized the two older children did not come out with her. The neighbors quickly came to help; breaking windows on the second floor by throwing chairs at it.

"Very tough. We tried to get in there by kicking in doors. We weren't successful. It's very hard -- they were too young to die," said Santosha Kirby, tried to save children.

When the Milwaukee Fire Department arrived, the home was completely engulfed in flames.

According to the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office, MaKayla and Marwaun did not suffer any other injuries other than thermal injuries related to the fire. Both of the children's deaths are being ruled an accident.

The fire department says it's still unclear whether the smoke detectors inside the home worked.

A vigil is planned for Sunday evening, September 6th at the home near Swan and Allyn at 5:00 p.m.
