Lawmakers consider new bill to change car seat laws in Wisconsin

MADISON — Wisconsin lawmakers are circulating a bill that would require children to ride in rear-facing car seats until they're two years old.

Current state law requires children to ride in rear-facing seats if they're less than a year old or weigh less than 20 pounds.

The bill's authors, Republican Rep. Amy Loudenbeck; Democratic Rep. Chris Taylor; and Republican Sen. Luther Olsen, said in a news release Wednesday that both the American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommend keeping children in rear-facing seats until they're two years old. They called the bill a common-sense measure that will save children's lives.

Spokeswomen for Assembly Speaker Robin Vos and Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald didn't immediately return an email seeking comment on the bill's chances.
