Suspicious package found, detonated in Milwaukee’s Red Arrow Park

MILWAUKEE -- The Milwaukee Police Department's Hazardous Device Unit detonated a suspicious bag found in Red Arrow Park in downtown Milwaukee shortly before 5 p.m. on Thursday, September 24th.

Police were notified of the suspicious bag by a citizen around 2:30 p.m. The park and immediate area surrounding it were secured within minutes.

Authorities say they are taking a closer look at the pieces left after detonating the bag to determine if it was dangerous. At this time, officials haven't been able to determine whether it was dangerous.

Before it was detonated, an X-ray was taken of the bag, but that X-ray didn't reveal anything to investigators.

Investigators are now taking a look at surveillance video to see whether it might indicate who dropped off the bag.

For a time, the westbound traffic on Kilbourn Ave. and northbound traffic on Water St. were shut down. But right around 5 p.m., those streets were reopened to commuters.

Police said the ATF was on scene to assist in the investigation.

So let me get this straight. Some guy leaves a bag somewhere. We can’t figure out what’s in it though the pictures certainly look to me like the bag is wide open. So after we can’t figure out what’s in it the only option is to blow it up? Why didn’t the X-ray reveal anything? Probably because the bag was empty to begin with. I can’t wait until they look at the surveillance cameras and find out some homeless guy left it there after digging it out of the trash behind Starbucks.

This was NOTHING but an opportunity to utilize Field Training in a public arena. Bag reported, undercover cops rifle through it, find nothing, call bomb squad, they talk to cops..decide to use the opportunity to train in public–on suspicious bag report. No buildings were evacuated much less notified of a possible bomb or suspicious pkg. Just move along people, the cops saved a lot of lives downtown today.

A couple questions for you Jewel. So who was it specifically that rifled through the bag? Did you actually see someone rifle through the bag? Which buildings should have been evacuated/ notified? I think it safe to say that you weren’t there, but it sounds like you have it all figured out.

Yeah Jewel that’s the problem. You think you do but you really don’t. Your first mistake is that you believe what is written in this article is a fact. And your second mistake is thinking you know more than you do. When I was in the military I had some training with EOD techs. So I have a pretty good idea how they operate. Do you have any training? So by looking at the pictures posted in this article and video taken from the channel 12 news helicopter, its obvious that the bag wasn’t the issue they were concerned about.

I don’t believe the article at all. You are misunderstanding me. There’s a difference when you’re there watching it in person and what you see or hear on TV ya know..;) You mad?

You sure changed your tune Jewel. I was just commenting on your original post where you made a bunch of statements which you can’t back up. The reason I commented on your post was to point out that you didn’t know what you where talking about. Therefore you shouldn’t just assume you knew what was going on and how it should be handled.

There are no records of this Practice Application in Real, Live Urban Setting ie., “Bomb Scare” online under Milwaukee Police Department calls for service, Nor did they evacuate anyone from around the area within 20-50 feet including businesses that have glass windows. Besides, that’s not the suitcase that ‘s the tool bag an officer was probing before the whole shenanigans!

Kinda like a “live fire” exercise where you don’t tell anybody you just practice in public to measure the constituents actions while roads are blocked etc….
