Suspicious package found, detonated in Milwaukee's Red Arrow Park

MILWAUKEE -- The Milwaukee Police Department's Hazardous Device Unit detonated a suspicious bag found in Red Arrow Park in downtown Milwaukee shortly before 5 p.m. on Thursday, September 24th.

Police were notified of the suspicious bag by a citizen around 2:30 p.m. The park and immediate area surrounding it were secured within minutes.

Authorities say they are taking a closer look at the pieces left after detonating the bag to determine if it was dangerous. At this time, officials haven't been able to determine whether it was dangerous.

Before it was detonated, an X-ray was taken of the bag, but that X-ray didn't reveal anything to investigators.

Investigators are now taking a look at surveillance video to see whether it might indicate who dropped off the bag.

For a time, the westbound traffic on Kilbourn Ave. and northbound traffic on Water St. were shut down. But right around 5 p.m., those streets were reopened to commuters.

Police said the ATF was on scene to assist in the investigation.
