"These guys are our heroes:" South Shore firefighters on the streets to "Fill the Boot"

MOUNT PLEASANT -- Instead of fighting fires, several of the men with the South Shore Fire Department spent Thursday, September 24th fighting for a cause dear to their heart -- with their boots in hand!

""It's the iconic symbol. A fire boot is the perfect collection device," said Joshua Jamison, firefighter with the South Shore Fire Department.

The firefighters hit the streets -- asking for donations for the Muscular Dystrophy Association or MDA.

"We try to make as much of a presence here as we can with the boots, the trucks, and everybody expects that we're around this time of year," said Jamison.

Muscular Dystrophy is a disease that causes the weakness and loss of muscle, which has no cure.

MDA is a non-profit organization, sponsoring research for effective treatments.

"We look at the strength that these families have, the strength that these children have. The positive outlook on life that these guys have is really humbling," said Jamison.

This year, Rasmussen Diamonds is matching up to $500 of the money raised during the first hour each day South Shore firefighters are out filling the boot.

"If our community supports us, we turn around and it's important to support them back," said Kathy Sustachek with Rasmussen Diamonds.

If you missed the firefighters while they were out filling the boot, then you're invited to stop by any of the South Shore Fire Department locations to drop off a donation within the next two weeks.

Last year, firefighters across the state raised half a million dollars for MDA.
