Dozens of animals find forever homes during MADACC's "Empty the Shelter" event

MILWAUKEE -- Since intake is so high this time of year at the Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission shelter (MADACC), the organization is helping animals get back into the community and in loving homes.

Dozens and dozens of potential pet owners lined up outside MADACC Saturday morning, September 26th  for the second "Empty the Shelter" adoption event.

"We have waived fees on all of our cat and dog adoptions so we have cats, kittens, and large dogs. We started the day with about 130 cats and kittens, and 16 dogs," said Kathy Shillinglaw, Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission.

Throughout the day, that number dwindled steadily as folks strolled the shelter for their perfect pet.

"We do our best to make sure they are all home appropriate and for people to see if these animals are a good fit for their family," said Shillinglaw.

Pakoulajp Lee wanted to make sure of just that, so she brought her dog, Simba, along.

"I want to make sure he is going to get along with a new dog and be able to accept a new dog," said Lee.

For Lee, the anticipation of getting a new pup is just as exciting.

"Seeing the way a dog warms up to you after the 10-minute walk feels so good," said Lee.

And walking away with a new addition to the family was a win-win for all.

The event runs until 5:00 p.m. Saturday evening, September 26th.
