"People are reckless:" Man struck & killed at 5th & North Ave; police search for vehicle

MILWAUKEE -- One of the most heartless acts he's ever seen. Those are the words from a man who witnessed a fatal hit-and-run at 5th and North Avenue in Milwaukee early Sunday, October 11th.

Police say the description of the suspect's vehicle is a white sedan, possibly a Nissan Maxima similar to the one in the picture just below.

From his front porch, Carl Lee has seen many car crashes in the busy intersection.

"People are reckless and they speed. The pole has been knocked down on each corner here," said Lee.

But what Lee saw Sunday morning, is something he now wishes he could forget.

"There was a body laying over there. Police told me that his face -- he was unrecognizable. They say he had to go take fingerprints," said Lee.

Milwaukee police say the 39-year-old man was struck and killed just before 4 a.m. on Sunday. Investigators say a white vehicle hit the man on North and kept going -- heading north on N. 5th Street.

Pedestrians like Rick Nelson say the intersection is dangerous at all hours with traffic and no easy way to cross.

Investigators believe the suspect's vehicle will have front-end damage.

"I think he got hit over by the laundromat and he drug him all the way over to the second tavern over there," said Lee.

Back on his porch, all Lee can do now is pray for the victim, and for justice.

"It was a shame. It hurts," said Lee.

Prior to the crash, police say the victim may have been involved in some sort of altercation. It is unclear if they knew the driver.
