Board member calls campaign finance bill 'mind boggling'

MADISON— A member of the board that oversees campaign finance law in Wisconsin says it is "mind boggling" that Republicans who control the Legislature are moving so quickly with a complex bill changing the law dealing with who can give how much to politicians.

Government Accountability Board member John Franke said Tuesday during its meeting that the bill goes to the heart of elections and the exercise of democracy.

He says, "It's mind boggling to me that we were rushed to get a new complicated law in place without careful deliberation about whether this law is going to present difficult enforcement problems."

The Assembly is scheduled to vote on passing the measure Wednesday. It's not clear when the Senate will take it up.
