Madison, Dane County considering storage lockers for homeless in public parking structures

MADISON — The city of Madison and Dane County are considering collaborating on a plan to set up storage lockers for the homeless in public parking structures.

Dane County supervisors are already weighing a proposal to put those lockers in the county garage and they want the city to designate more space. A City Council resolution is expected to be introduced Tuesday.

The county proposal calls for lockers that are big enough to store sleeping gear and a backpack. Homeless people would register for a combination lock to secure them.

The State Journal reports a communal storage area behind the Madison Municipal Building was taken down in July because of health concerns and alleged illicit activity.
