Greenfield Fire Dept. SUV struck in Hale Interchange; sets off chain-reaction crash

GREENFIELD -- A Greenfield Fire Department command SUV was struck after officials responded to a vehicle that went into a ditch near the Hale Interchange Friday night, October 23rd. The crash set off a chain-reaction accident involving five other vehicles.

The Greenfield Fire Department responded to the area of S. 107th Street on I-43 eastbound at 9:59 p.m. for a report of a crash. Officials say a driver lost control of his vehicle and went into a ditch.

The driver of that vehicle was treated and released on scene.

While fire officials were tending to that driver, a woman driving a PT Cruiser struck the Chevy Tahoe command SUV. The fire department SUV started on fire following the crash. The Battalion Chief tells FOX6 News that it was a minor fire, but the fire department did have to pull a hose line out just in case.

The woman who was driving the PT  Cruiser was injured and was transported to Froedtert Hospital.

Officials say the crash involving the fire department SUV and the PT Cruiser set off a chain-reaction of multiple accidents in the same area.  The Battalion Chief  says there were three additional accidents involving five other vehicles.

As a result of these crashes, all lanes of I-43 eastbound were temporarily shut down.  Four people were injured in these other crashes, but all four were treated and released at the scene.

No firefighters were injured in any of these crashes.
