Kids hustled off football field in Brookfield when shots flew for the second time this week

BROOKFIELD -- A family was shot at while driving through Brookfield on Wednesday night, October 28th, and police say they were intentionally followed and targeted. Police say there is no threat to the public, but still, some are alarmed -- especially those who heard the gunfire.

The shooting happened near Burleigh Boulevard and Cullen Drive.

Police say a 30-year-old woman was behind the wheel of a vehicle -- a 27-year-old man and their young child inside.

The family believed they were being followed as they headed west on Capitol Drive near Calhoun, so they then headed south

on Calhoun, and then east on Burleigh west of Pilgrim.

That's when their vehicle was shot at, and the man was hit twice in his upper leg and chin.

The man was taken to Froedtert Hospital for treatment. He has since been released.

The woman, who was driving the vehicle, and the young child were not hurt.

"We thought we heard something like a gunshot," Jackson Hoerig said.

Jackson Hoerig

Hoerig, an eighth-grader, was halfway through football practice on Wednesday out on Burleigh Elementary School's field.

"We just kind of thought to ignore it," Hoerig said.

That wasn't an option though. There was a hustle on the field, as one of the coaches made everyone stop.

"He said 'there were gunshots, and we all need to evacuate and go into the school' -- and so we ran up the hill and just ran into the building," Hoerig said.

The kids stayed there for about 15 minutes.

"We thought we should be safe. We`re in a school. That should be pretty good shelter," Hoerig said.

"It`s a pretty quiet neighborhood -- and we usually don`t see anything like this," Michelle Hoerig said.

Michelle Hoerig says she saw the squads and ambulances even before she went to pick her son up from practice.

"I didn`t think much of it," Michelle Hoerig said.

She says even after the fact, she was comforted knowing her son was in good hands.

"We love the Brookfield community and we`ve been here for a long time. It`s a great place to raise a family -- but I think its naive to think things cant happen in your own backyard," Michelle Hoerig said.

Police are still looking for the shooter in this case. They say the suspect's vehicle is a small, white SUV with dark, tinted windows.

As for a motive, they're still investigating, but police say they're ruled out road rage.

We're told the victims in this case do not live in Brookfield. Police say they were just passing through the area when this incident occurred.
