“PayQuick with eWIC:" WIC program recipients to receive benefits via an electronic card

MILWAUKEE -- The Wisconsin Women, Infants & Children (WIC) program recently announced they will distribute monthly benefits to their clients through an “eWIC” (or electronic WIC) benefit system in Wisconsin.

The official rollout of eWIC in SE WI began during the week of September 21st.

WIC food packages provide supplemental foods designed to meet the special nutritional needs of low-income pregnant, breastfeeding, non-breastfeeding postpartum women, infants and children up to five years of age who are at nutritional risk.

Previously, benefits were distributed via monthly checks, and over time, proved to be challenging for families. Shopping could be difficult and if checks were lost, reissuing them was not guaranteed and time consuming, creating hurdles for families to get the help they needed.

“Over the past few years, WIC has seen a decrease in the number of eligible families using our services, which may be due to the inconvenience of paper checks,” says Angie Wilks-Tate, WIC Project Director at MLK Heritage Health Center, We hope that the convenience of the new eWIC card will encourage families to return to WIC.”

WIC’s new “PayQuick with eWIC” initiative gives families a convenient and speedy way to shop for WIC-approved foods using an eWIC electronic benefit card.

Specific benefits of the eWIC card include:

"We are very excited about our new eWIC system,” says Wilks-Tate. “Now, mothers can “Just Swipe it” (eWIC card) when they go to the store, giving them a convenient way to shop for WIC approved foods. eWIC ensures families continue to receive foods which are healthy and support them and their children’s growth.”
