"I'm going to dive into this pool:" Paul Ryan returns home to Wisconsin as House Speaker

MILWAUKEE -- Ryan stepped off a Southwest Airlines flight and onto Wisconsin soil on Friday, October 30th for the first time as House Speaker and FOX6 News happened to be on the same plane.

When Ryan, his wife and three children boarded in D.C., surprised passengers looked up and said, "Hey, Mr. Speaker!"

Ryan had just finished a Q&A with reporters, including FOX6's Theo Keith. Ryan said he changed his mind on the job while at home in Janesville, talking to friends and family.

"Then I turned from no, to skeptical, to willing, to eager -- and now I'm excited and the way I said it to my colleagues is if I'm in for a dime, I'm in for a dollar. I'm going to dive into this pool, the deep end of the pool, and I'm going to be happy and joyful," said Ryan in a telephone interview.

Now, Ryan has the job of negotiating with President Barack Obama. Twice on the call, Ryan took digs at the president, saying he was unwilling to balance the budget and going a step further on immigration.

"I think it would be ridiculous to try and attempt immigration reform with a president we simply cannot trust, so I don't think that's in the cards for this congress," said Ryan in a telephone interview.

Ryan says he still plans to come home every weekend.

"I work here, and I live in Janesville, so I'm going to continue working in Washington and living in Janesville. That means I do a weekly commute, and nothing's going to change form that perspective," Ryan said.

Ryan says he can balance the speakership along with the first district of Wisconsin and his family time. We'll see how that works out in practice.
