Republican lawmakers propose Iran business prohibition

MADISON — Republican legislators have introduced a bill that would prohibit the state from investing in companies that do business in Iran.

Rep. Dale Kooyenga and Sen. Leah Vukmir's proposal also would require the state to sell any holdings in companies that operate in Iran within a year.

The bill comes in response to the nuclear accord President Barack Obama's administration brokered with the Iranians. The deal calls for Iran to curb its nuclear program in exchange for relief from international economic sanctions, which would open the door for companies to step up operations in the country.

Republicans strongly oppose the deal. Kooyenga and Vukmir wrote in a memo to their colleagues that the bill helps limit the effects of the accord.
