More limited bill to track school crime introduced

MADISON — A second proposal to track crime in Wisconsin public schools has been introduced.

The measure proposed Tuesday would create a pilot program to track crime and student safety incidents in one urban district, one suburban district and one rural school.

That bill comes after Republican Rep. John Jagler, of Watertown, last month proposed requiring information on school report cards about crimes committed at all high schools, their events and on school buses.

The latest bill is by Republican Senate President Mary Lazich, of New Berlin, and Republican Rep. Ken Skowronski, of Franklin.

Jagler says he is not interested in a trial program. He says information about crime in schools should be reported and available statewide.

The proposals may be considered in January when the Legislature resumes its session.
