North Shore Fire officials called out to house fire in Brown Deer; three pets killed

BROWN DEER -- North Shore Fire officials on Sunday night, November 22nd were called out to a house fire in Brown Deer.

It happened at a home near 53rd and Willow around 7:30 p.m.

Crews arriving on scene reported heavy smoke coming from a single family home.

The three occupants of the home reported they smelled smoke and went to investigate.

Upon entering their kitchen, they were met with heavy, black smoke coming up the stairs from the basement.

Fire crews initiated an aggressive attack on what was determined to be a basement fire.

All of the occupants of the home were able to get out prior to the arrival of fire officials. But three pets remained inside. Two cats and one guinea pig were killed in the fire.

One of the home's residents was evaluated for minor injuries but ultimately declined transportation to the hospital.

The basement of the home suffered heavy fire damage.

The first floor of the home suffered extensive heat and smoke damage.

The preliminary damage estimate to the structure and contents is approximately $80,000.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. It appears it started in a corner of the basement.

There was a smoke alarm sounding when fire crews arrived.
