Police lead procession after 33-year-old McFarland officer killed in head-on crash in Dane Co.

TOWN OF ALBION — A procession was held Tuesday, November 24th for a police officer killed a crash with a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources vehicle in a rural area of Dane County on Monday afternoon.

Police led the procession of the vehicle carrying the officer's body. The procession began in Madison and went through McFarland -- ending at a funeral home in Janesville.

WMTV-TV (http://bit.ly/1leklAe) reports it happened around noon Monday, November  23rd on County Highway N in the Town of Albion. Authorities say the officer had just started his shift.

Police officer killed in crash in Dane County



Dane County sheriff's spokeswoman Elise Schaffer says a 25-year-old Fitchburg woman in a DNR pickup truck crossed the center line and hit the officer's squad car head-on.

Schaffer says the woman was working as a DNR employee at the time. She was taken to a Janesville hospital with minor injuries.

The officer is identified as 33-year-old Ryan Copeland of Janesville. Copeland had served as a K-9 officer with the McFarland Police Department since 2013.

The accident remains under investigation.
