Family of 3 struggles after landlord's murder forces them out: "Where are we going to live?"

MILWAUKEE -- Two families were forced to leave their homes when their Milwaukee apartment building was deemed "unlivable," the day before Thanksgiving. Their landlord was supposed to make repairs, but he was killed in a recent shooting. Friday, November 27th we're learning more about the families affected.

The holidays have not been kind for a pair of families living in the apartment building near 51st and Center.

Wednesday, November 25th Chrisopher Randle's family had to leave -- a gas leak forcing them out of their home.

Milwaukee's Department of Neighborhood Services boarded the place up.

Randle told FOX6 News, he would stay with family for the first night but after, he's unsure.

"I don't think we should be treated as if this was something we brought upon ourselves and we now must figure it out," said Takayla Thomas, forced to move out.

Thomas was too emotional to talk on Wednesday. She was pulled away from her niece's funeral to pack as much as she could before being locked out.

"I have two children and all three of us are in different places. I am staying with a friend. My son who, will be 17 next week, is with a cousin and my daughter is 18, and she is with an aunt," said Thomas.

The building's owner would be responsible for fixing problems like a gas leak or busted furnace. Unfortunately, Thomas' landlord was killed in a shooting earlier in the month.

"I definitely feel for our landlord's family and what they are dealing with, but at the same time I have two children and myself to worry about long term. Where are we going to live?" said Thomas.

Both families still have belongings in their apartments. Thomas says she has to schedule an appointment with the city in order to collect any items left behind.
