MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee police say they are investigating a fatal fire that happened near 60th and Capitol Drive on Monday night, December 7th.
Police say a 51-year-old Milwaukee man was killed in the fire.
The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office has identified the victim as Jonathan Wierdsma. A final cause of death is pending further toxicology testing.
The fire appears to have started in the kitchen area of the 51-year-old man's apartment.
At this time, police say it does not appear this fire is suspicious.
The investigation is ongoing.
American Red Cross officials said volunteers were on scene to assist.
The fire happened around 6:45 p.m. in a multi-unit building. All 16 units were evacuated.
Allycia Wright was on her way home from work.
"I get off the bus and the apartment is on fire. I can`t believe it," Wright said. "Hopefully there`s not to much damage because I live right next door to him. I don`t know if we`re going to be displaced. I don`t know if we can even get back into the building. They told us we had to wait. It`s just a waiting game."
