Wet, slippery roads: Sheriff's deputies respond to dozens of crashes Sunday

MILWAUKEE COUNTY -- Fog and rain may have contributed to dozens of crashes on the Milwaukee County freeway system Sunday, December 13th.

Milwaukee County Sheriff’s officials say deputies were called out to 30 crashes involving property damage only, 16 crashes involving injury and seven disabled vehicles Sunday.

The majority of those crashes occurred in the Plainfield Curve and the Stadium Interchange.

Milwaukee County Sheriff's officials tell FOX6 News a squad car was struck Sunday morning in the Mitchell Interchange -- setting off a chain-reaction crash.

It happened around 6:30 a.m.

We're told a squad was on scene backing up another deputy on scene in a separate squad -- as they worked a crash involving property damage.

A pickup truck hauling a fifth wheel trailer with another truck on the bed of that trailer struck one of the squads. The truck subsequently struck the other squad at the scene -- pushing that squad into the vehicle that was involved in the initial crash.

One deputy had to be extricated from a squad, and that deputy was taken to Froedtert Hospital for treatment of what are believed to be non life-threatening injuries.

Milwaukee police tell FOX6 News the driver of the pickup truck was arrested, and will be facing citations. That driver was not hurt.

Sheriff's officials are reminding drivers that they are required by law to move over or slow down for emergency vehicles on the freeway.
