Saying thank you: Vietnam veteran's home is decorated for free for the holidays

HARTLAND -- It's a simple gesture to spread holiday cheer and to say thanks.

"To me, it's minor compared to what he's sacrificed and done for us," said James Hacka, Christmas Decor by Swimming Pool Services technician.

Each year, through a nomination process, Christmas Decor by Swimming Pool Services selects two military families who will have their homes decorated for free.

Al Runingen

This year Al Runingen's family was chosen.

"You could've knocked me over with a feather. I just didn't think it was possible. I wish I could hit the lottery that easy," said Runingen as he laughed.

Runingen served in Vietnam.

He earned a Purple Heart after a bullet grazed his head during an ambush.

"I just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time I got creased in the head," said Runingen.

To honor Runingen, decorators hung red, white, and blue lights.

"We get a picture of what the house looks like and it's basically up to our discretion on what we want to do," said Hacka.

Runingen watched the decorators in awe and while feeling relief -- as he will avoid the ladder this year....

"Any of the decorations that I've done has been pretty small potatoes compared to what these guys have been doing," said Runingen.
