Tentative opening of "Slice of Ice" in Red Arrow Park set for Saturday, weather permitting

MILWAUKEE -- Preparations are underway for the Saturday, December 19th opening of Slice of Ice, the refrigerated rink in Red Arrow Park.

The rink at 920 N. Water St. is scheduled to open at 11:00 a.m. Saturday -- pending the cooperation of the weather.

“It’s great to have the opening in sight!” said Guy Smith, chief of operations. “All the warm weather wreaked havoc on our schedule for opening the ice rink. In addition to the need for an extended period of colder weather, Parks staff need time for the many steps involved in building the rink. This is not something that can be done with the flip of a switch.”

The multi-step process of getting the rink ready for skating began a few days ago. After chillers lowered the temperature of the concrete, staff began building the ice Wednesday evening.

With a successful base in place, on Thursday, December 17th the crew painted the surface.

Throughout the day Thursday and Friday, the crew will continue to mist and then flood the rink to create the multiple layers of ice needed.

Once the ice is built, the rink can withstand warmer temperatures.

Throughout the season, ice skates may be rented for $7 per pair for ages 17 and under, and $8 per pair for adults. Residents and visitors with their own skates can skate for free.
