Oconomowoc Area School District: Investigation underway after threat made by student

OCONOMOWOC -- Oconomowoc Area School District officials say school will be in session as usual on Monday, December 21st -- despite a threat made by a Nature Hill Intermediate student.

School district officials say the threat was investigated by Oconomowoc police on Sunday.

Officials say the threat was made by a Nature Hill Intermediate student, and that student implied via social media that there would be a school shooting at the school on Monday, December 21st.

A thorough investigation revealed there is no credibility whatsoever to this threat, school district officials say.

The student who made the threat will not be in school on the days leading up to the Christmas break, while the investigation continues, and officials determine whether there will be any further disciplinary action.

School district officials have notified families and staff members.

School will operate as usual on Monday at Nature Hill Intermediate.

School district officials said this in a statement to FOX6 News:

"Privacy laws prevent the district from commenting on anything specific regarding this student. District policy is very clear, however, with regard to incidents in which students endanger the health, safety or welfare of other students or staff in our schools. Policy allows for suspension from school and additional disciplinary actions up to and including consideration from expulsion from school by the School Board.

School will operate as normal (Monday).

All NHI families and staff have received a letter regarding this situation. Counselors and school leadership will be available to speak with any student who wishes to do so.

We encourage parents and guardians to talk with their children about the serious nature, and the potential consequences, of making threats about school. In addition, parents and guardians should encourage children to report threats to cause harm to a trusted adult. Rest assured, the safety and security of our students and staff remains our top priority at Nature Hill Intermediate and in our school district."
