"Our goal is to keep the roadways safe:" Officers out in force, looking for drunk drivers on NYE



MILWAUKEE -- Despite the cold weather, with temperatures in the low 20s and wind chills in the teens and dropping on Thursday night, December 31st, people were out celebrating New Year's Eve in Milwaukee. And law enforcement officials were out in force in an effort to keep you safe.

New Year's Eve would be a busy night for officers in southeastern Wisconsin.

Officers with more than 30 departments were out looking for drunk drivers.

New Year's Eve is a night for celebration. Some spent time on the ice at Milwaukee's Red Arrow Park.

"It's good family time," Mark Carver said.

Others chose to ring in the new year at a bar.

"We came to have fun tonight," Santra Astorga said.

"We want to keep the innocent drivers safe tonight," Brian Foth, Pewaukee police officer said.

No matter how folks would be spending the evening, law enforcement officials would be out -- working to ensure safety.

"Our goal tonight is to keep the roadways as safe as possible by taking any intoxicated driver off the road," Foth said.

More than 100 officers with more than 30 departments would be patrolling the streets on one of their busiest nights of the year.

"We're out trying to detect any drunk drivers, trying to take them off the road tonight," Foth said. "Just be smart. That's all we're asking for."

The New Year's Eve OWI patrols will continue until 4:00 a.m. on New Year's Day.
