DNR: Wisconsin sturgeon spearers enjoy cold season opener; largest was 131.6 lbs.

MENASHA — It was a cold but successful opening day for many of Wisconsin's sturgeon spearers.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources reports 151 sturgeon were registered on the Upriver Lakes, with another 84 on Lake Winnebago. That marks a slow opening day for Winnebago. DNR biologist Ryan Koenigs tells WBAY-TV (http://bit.ly/1O9J5Am) that's partly because the water wasn't very clear.

The largest was a 131.6 pound, 73.3-inch female at Payne's Point.

The DNR reports there were 500 fewer shanties on Lake Winnebago on Saturday, February 13th compared with opening day in 2015. Officials believe many people are waiting a few more days in hopes the water will become clearer.

The DNR expects a full 16-day season on Lake Winnebago, but the season will likely end by mid-week on the Upriver Lakes.
