It happened around 10:00 p.m.

Police say a 35-year-old man was struck by a truck while crossing the street -- headed eastbound. The vehicle was headed northbound, and according to witnesses, sped up to "beat the light" -- continuing on 16th Street without stopping after hitting the man.

The victim was crossing against a "no walk" sign, police say.

The man was taken to the hospital for treatment of "very serious" injuries. He later died.

The striking vehicle is described as a newer model white pickup truck with a black rack holding ladders.
