Caledonia police: Man tells bizarre story to rob elderly couple's home

RACINE COUNTY -- An elderly couple was robbed in Caledonia by a man claiming their roof was leaking and he was going to fix it because his father was the one who put the roof on to begin with.

According to Caledonia police, an elderly woman was shoveling snow on Wednesday, March 2nd on Tennessee Road, when she was approached by a Hispanic man who told her his father put the roof on her house 10 years ago.

Police say the man told her he stopped by because the roof was leaking and needed to be fixed.

Authorities say even though the homeowners just had the roof replaced last fall, they let the man into their home.

According to police, the man created a distraction and was left unattended inside the home. The suspect was able to move about the house unobserved by the homeowners by asking about leaks in other places. At one point, police say the homeowners found the suspect in the kitchen cabinets.

Police say after the suspect left the home, the elderly man realized he was missing money from his wallet, the cordless phone that was under a cabinet the suspect was in, was unplugged from the wall -- and the front door that was previously locked was found unlocked.

Authorities describe the suspect as a Hispanic male, late 30s, 5'9", 170lbs, brown eyes, and thin mustache. He was last seen wearing a blue jean jacket and blue jeans. No hat and no gloves.

The suspect's vehicle is described as a full-size grey or silver pick up truck, GM product, no cap. There are no decals on the truck. Police say there is something other than a license plate on the front of the vehicle.

According to police, two other Hispanic males were inside the truck. At some point, police say they were seen on the front walkway of the home.
