MILWAUKEE -- It's National Meatball Day! In this week's Dining with Duria, Angelica shows us how to make some meatballs with a Mediterranean twist.

Greek Meatballs with Avocado Tzatziki Sauce

  • Ingredients for the Greek Meatballs:
  • 1 lb ground lamb or ground beef
  •  ½ medium red onion, finely diced (about ½ cup)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • Zest of ½ lemon
  • 1 tbsp fresh oregano, chopped or 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp ground coriander
  • ½ tsp ground cumin
  • Sea salt & pepper, to taste
  • ¼ cup feta cheese (optional)
  • 1 egg

Ingredients for Tzatziki sauce:

  • 1 avocado
  • 1 small/medium cucumber or ½ large cucumber, cut in half and seeds scraped out with a spoon
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 tbsp red onion, diced
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 1 tbsp of fresh dill (or mint, depending on preference) or 1 tsp of dried dill
  • ¼ cup sour cream or Greek Yogurt
  • Sea salt & pepper, to taste
  • ¼ cup feta cheese (optional)

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  2. Combine all the meatball ingredients together and form into balls, approximately 1 ½ to 2 inch balls.
  3. Place on a baking pan and bake for 25 minutes and let cool.
  4. For avocado Tzatziki Sauce, combine all the sauce ingredients together in a blender or food processor.
  5. Blend until smooth and creamy.
  6. Serve meatballs with the sauce either on top of a salad, on lettuce wraps, on zucchini noodles, or with pita bread.
