Security threat cancels classes at UW-Platteville

PLATTEVILLE -- Police say a report of a man with a military-style rifle on campus prompted the University of Wisconsin-Platteville to shut down on Monday.

A student said he came out of a bathroom stall at Ullsvik Hall and saw another man with what he believed to be an AK-47 pointed down. The student said he saw a gun barrel and heard a clicking sound, so he pulled the fire alarm.

Police say no weapon or gunman has been found.

Classes were canceled at 1:30 p.m. Monday due to the security threat, and campus offices and services were closed. Students who live on campus were told to return to their residence halls.

Authorities will continue searching buildings, but classes are expected to resume Tuesday.

Nearly 9,000 students attend UW-Platteville in southwestern Wisconsin.
