Humane Society officials provide update on newborn puppies found in trash, now nine days old

FOND DU LAC -- Officials with the Fond du Lac Humane Society on Tuesday, March 22nd provided an update on three newborn puppies found in a trash can in South Milwaukee on March 15th. The now nine-day-old pups are being cared for at the Fond du Lac Humane Society.

Officials there said they received a gift on Tuesday morning from an animal lover -- a white warming pillow with Mom's heartbeat.

Humane Society officials said one of the pups suffered a slight setback on Monday -- with a bit of diarrhea and very slight dehydration that caused him to not want to nurse, but with some fluids and an adjustment to the feeding schedule he is doing better.

The puppies were found on Tuesday, March 15th and taken to the Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission. They were then rushed into foster care to ensure their survival, because they need care around the clock.

MADACC officials said these puppies were lucky to have been found and rescued.

They are small and fragile, but Renee Webb with the Fond du Lac Humane Society said they are fighters. When they were found, the puppies were just two days old.

"Furious, just heartbroken that with all the resources, there's just so much available to people to be able to get help. There's no reason to throw newborn puppies in a garbage can," Webb said.

Webb said the puppies are being bottle-fed every three hours, around the clock.

"They've gained about an ounce every day since they came in," Webb said.

The puppies were driven to Fond du Lac by Badger Rescue Animal Transport Services, or BRATS. They were called by MADACC.

"It was best to get them out of there and into a more quiet environment than what they would've had there. It's critical to the puppies to get them someplace where they can get that nutrition that they need on a regular basis. That's why this one was so urgent," Lynn Mitchell, BRATS president said.

Webb said the hope is that if all goes well, the puppies will be healthy and ready for adoption in about eight weeks.

"Something like this, when you can take a puppy that really had no chance of survival and be able to hand them to an adopter - it's amazing. It's absolutely amazing," Webb said.

Webb said Fond du Lac Humane Society officials have already taken calls from folks looking to adopt the puppies.

"We are probably going to get a lot of applications to adopt, but we gotta make sure we make the best match for them," Webb said.

Until the puppies do find their forever homes, Webb is just hopeful they'll continue to grow and thrive.

"Had they been left in that trash can for more than a couple hours, they would have died, so at this point it's a miracle that they are alive and well," Webb said.
