FedEx employee nods off while loading plane in Memphis, wakes up in Lubbock, Texas

LUBBOCK, Texas -- There are probably more than a few of us out there who have nodded off at work. A seemingly harmless nap landed a FedEx employee in a bit of a bind.

An unidentified FedEx ground crew member was loading shipments onto an aircraft in Memphis, Tennessee on Friday, April 15th when he somehow nodded off around 4:00 a.m., according to FOX 34.

The man woke up as the plane neared the airport in Lubbock, Texas.

He attempted to alert the pilots by knocking on the cabin door, but they wouldn’t open it up. He was able to reach them by phone and was ordered to sit in a jump seat until they landed, Lubbock International Airport Executive Director Kelly Campbell said.

Lubbock police, FBI officials and Transportation Security Administration agents were all waiting for the accidental stowaway with a long list of questions when the plane landed at 5:30 a.m.

“The person was not arrested after police determined there was no criminal intent,” a statement from the City of Lubbock said. “The employee was released to local FedEx officials. There was no impact to aircraft operations at Lubbock’s airport.”

FedEx spokesman Jim Masilak said in an emailed statement that there was never any danger to employees or cargo.

“We are fully cooperating with investigating authorities,” Masilak said.
