Up to 100 may be temporarily displaced after fire at apartment building near 47th & Burleigh

MILWAUKEE -- Officials said up to 100 people may be temporarily displaced after a fire at an apartment building near 47th and Burleigh in Milwaukee.

Multiple calls came in regarding this fire shortly before 5:30 p.m.

Firefighters found heavy fire coming from a single apartment on the first floor.

The fire was upgraded to a second alarm due to the size of the building and the amount of fire in the building. Twenty pieces of heavy equipment were called out to the scene.

"It was a pretty extensive fire within that apartment, within one apartment on the first floor, but because of the volume of fire we had and the fact that it was going out of the windows and taking out the window above it, things of that nature, we did evacuate the entire structure," Deputy Chief Terry Lintonen with the Milwaukee Fire Department said.

No one was hurt.

The fire was brought under control around 6:00 p.m.

A Milwaukee County Transit System bus was dispatched to the scene to temporarily house those displaced.

Officials said there was smoke damage throughout the building.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

A preliminary estimate is that the fire caused more than $100,000 worth of damage.
