Madison man finds "big box of human blood" on street; police learn it belonged to Red Cross

MADISON -- A 68-year-old Stoughton man made an unusual discovery in the middle of the road on Sunday afternoon, May 1st.

Madison police say the man was on Zeirer Road around 2:30 p.m. when he came upon a large box that was clearly marked "human blood."

Police said the man placed the box in his car and seconds later he spotted a Madison police officer stopped at the lights on East Washington Avenue.

The man told that officer that he had just found a "big box of blood, human blood."

The officer and man pulled into a nearby parking lot and discovered the box belonged to the American Red Cross.

The officer made some phone calls. A lab technician told the officer that they had just received blood from a satellite location. They were expecting six boxes, but they only received five.

The officer delivered the donated blood to the agency's Sheboygan Avenue location.

The lab tech told police that a volunteer likely loaded five and inadvertently left one on the car.

The box was not struck by a car or truck and was not damaged.
