"He had no money on him:" Pizza Shuttle delivery driver shot on the job by attempted robber

MILWAUKEE --A pizza delivery man shot on the job. Five hours later, police track down the alleged shooter and arrest him. The person responsible is behind bars now facing charges of armed robbery and first degree recklessly endangering safety with use of a dangerous weapon.

Pizza Shuttle

"The driver himself called and said he was shot," said Pizza Shutter Owner, Mark Gold.

It was a call unlike the Pizza Shuttle owner had before.

"He must have felt secure enough to get out of his car and knock on the front door," said Gold.

Wednesday afternoon, April 27th one of Gold's drivers got a call to a church near 14th and Juneau. The driver told his boss and police, that a man later identified as Darrien Garrett, walked towards him with a gun and demanded money.

Darrien Garrett

The delivery driver, ""opened the center console, pretending like he was looking for the money," according to Gold.

Instead, the delivery driver attempted to drive off, that's when Garrett fired his gun and shot the delivery driver in the back.

The driver was taken to the hospital and was released three hours later.

Meantime, police went on a search for the shooter and about five hours later, they found Garrett, outside his Milwaukee apartment -- with a gun on him.

"That was amazing. I don't know how they did that," said Gold.

Mark Gold

Gold says his entire staff was relieved.

"They weren't sure where this person was," said Gold.

Garrett later admitted to the shooting, according to the criminal complaint saying he was, "upset that the driver was driving away and that he did not get any money."

Gold says there's a reason Garrett didn't get any money from his driver.

"He had no money on him. Most of our drivers have no money. Most of the orders are credit cards," said Gold.

According to Gold, the driver actually wanted to go back to work the next day but they're giving him some time off to recuperate. He will be back however next week.
