"It actually helps me out:" Deadline nears for those seeking help with their energy bills

MILWAUKEE -- There are just two days left if you want to help give your wallet a break. The deadline is quickly approaching to get energy assistance with your utility bills.

"The assistance is a one-time payment. It's a help toward your utility cost. The program doesn't always cover the full bill. It's an assisted payment; it's to help you with your energy burden," said Sonya Eddie, manager at Community Advocates Energy Assistance Program. "What this program will do, it helps bridge your payment and the payments you are unable to make."

Because of the Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program, the state program administered by the Milwaukee County Department of Health and Human Services, residents like Victoria Oliver are resting a little easier.

Oliver is a single mother of six -- and grateful for the assistance.

"It actually helps me out so I won't have to put so much on my We Energies bills," Oliver said.

Eddie said the need is great. So far, more than 56,000 households have been served with this year's program. Folks who qualify can get significant assistance.

"It ranges anywhere from, I want to say, anywhere from $50, I've seen payments up to $1,400," said Eddie.

In order or receive benefits of the program, you must schedule an appointment to apply prior to May 15th. On Saturday, the office closes at noon, but the phone lines and website will be open all weekend long.
