Village of Brown Deer reaps benefits of Milwaukee businesses moving east

MILWAUKEE -- There is some business turnover ahead on Milwaukee's northwest side. Two strip malls are on the auction block -- scheduled for new buyers in June. Officials with the Village of Brown Deer say they are watching what is going on just across the border. In some respects, the village is reaping the benefits of Milwaukee businesses moving east.

Jackie Chesser

"I've kind of noticed that there are a lot of the very stable box companies leaving. I'm seeing a lot of exits. So it's a little concerning," said Jackie Chesser, who operates Goody's Gourmet Popcorn Shop on Brown Deer Road in Milwaukee.

Chesser has been at her current location for two years -- and likes it. But in a few weeks, the strip mall she is in will be auctioned off. Likewise for another strip mall just across the street.

"I have thought a lot about the 'Tosa area. I have also thought a lot about the Brown Deer area; across the street, not far, but still in the area -- so our existing customers will find it still very easy to get to us," Chesser said.

Nate Piotrowski

"Any time there is vacancies or retail challenges immediately adjacent to the village, it does create perception that Brown Deer has the same challenges," said Nate Piotrowski, Brown Deer development director.

While Piotrowski says they are working with Milwaukee and are not poaching business, things are happening. Piotrowski points to the recent relocation of Walmart from Milwaukee a few miles east to Brown Deer.

Aldi, which currently is in Milwaukee on Brown Deer Road, is now building a few blocks east on Brown Deer Road in the Village of Brown Deer.

Pack Technologies, a business in Milwaukee, is expanding into Brown Deer at the former American site.

"I think area businesses recognize that Brown Deer is a stable and safe community and one who's government is responsive," Piotrowski said.

Brown Deer officials say they are working with Milwaukee on a joint land use study to update the city's master plan -- and work together to stabilize the area. Milwaukee officials were not available for comment on Tuesday, May 24th.
