"Nice fresh coat of paint:" Boys & Girls Club a bit brighter thanks to community project

MILWAUKEE -- A Milwaukee Boys and Girls Club location is a bit brighter --  just in time for the busy summer season. It's thanks to a community project happening across the country.

"We're going to prime all these areas and get a nice fresh coat of paint on it," said Justin Peare, Sherwin-Williams sales representative.

It was a small job, but it was part of something much larger: National Painting Week for Sherwin-Williams.

Employees all over the U.S. and Canada donated their time, and the company donated the paint to beautify community spaces.

"Coast to coast, all 4,000 locations are taking part in this," said Peare.

The Don & Sallie Davis Boys and Girls Club on Milwaukee's south side is one of the busiest locations in the city. It serves more than 300 kids in a day and is attached to MPS' Rogers Street Academy.

It's a safe and educational space for kids in elementary school through high school -- so this week means a lot.

"It shows that we are a community and we are all here for the same reason," said club manager Dominica Johnson-Tirabo.

The health room and the Lego room got a fresh coat of paint. The health room is used for everything from physical fitness to life skills development. The Lego room is where the five and six-year-olds come to get creative and use Legos to build projects.

The project involved just a few hours of work and a few gallons of paint, but it goes a long way.

"To make sure the kids have positive environments that they can interact with one another in," said Johnson-Tirabo.

Other projects for Sherwin-Williams' National Painting Week included beautifying churches, schools and food pantries around the United States.
