"We want justice:" June 5th marks one month since Za'layia Jenkins shot; no one in custody

MILWAUKEE -- Sunday, June 5th marked one month since Za'layia Jenkins was shot -- struck by a stray bullet while inside a home near 15th and Meinecke in Milwaukee. Those who knew and loved the nine-year-old girl who would have turned 10 years old on May 17th came together Sunday to pray and march in Za'layia's honor.

Jenkins' mother says she now fears for her safety and the safety of her other children, her nieces and her nephews. She says their lives have been turned upside down.

The march Sunday, June 5th was in honor of a little girl who loved purple. The bullet holes still visible at the home where Jenkins was shot -- one month later.

Destiny Boone

"We want justice. I need justice for Za'layia," Destiny Boone, Jenkins' mother said.

Boone's daughter was in critical condition for 11 days before her passing.

Boone said she is confident the person responsible for her daughter's death will be caught, but she says her life will never be the same.

"Everything is different. The way I see, the way I hear, my heartbeat, the way I breathe -- everything is different," Boone said.

Family members and friends of Za'layia Jenkins formed a large prayer circle in the street -- asking that the person who fired the shot that would take Jenkins' life be captured within the next 48 hours, and that there will soon be closure for Jenkins' family.

"We going through a lot, but we just taking it day by day and, you know, who did this -- just turn yourself in so we can have some type of justice, just some type of peace," Kisha Spears, Jenkins' aunt said.

There was also a prayer for the other children taking part in the prayer circle -- that they may remain safe.

"I don`t want this to happen ever again. I hate that it had to happen to my daughter. Sometimes I wake up and I`m like 'let it all be a nightmare, a horrible nightmare' but it`s not," Boone said.
