The People's Flag of Milwaukee select "Sunrise Over the Lake" design for new city flag

MILWAUKEE -- The People's Flag of Milwaukee unveiled the winner of the contest to redesign the city flag.

Designed by freelance designer Robert Lenz from Bay View, "Sunrise Over the Lake" was selected as the winner on Tuesday night, June 14th.

Over the last few months, expert judges whittled down over 1,000 design submissions to just one.

Lenz's design took the top spot by popular vote.  He says the sun rising over Lake Michigan symbolizes a new day, while the blue bars represent the city's three rivers and founders.

"I put together a bunch of concepts together but I kept coming back to the sunrise. The sunrise over the lake is something that we can see every morning in Milwaukee, the lakefront is the most valuable asset and it remains a gathering place from Milwaukeeans today, it's one of our most important features here in the city," said Lenz.

The decision is unofficial as the Common Council has the final say on its adoption.
