Worker killed after accident during energy plant demolition

BELOIT — A worker has died after being injured in an accident during the demolition of an old Alliant Energy power plant in Beloit.

The Beloit Fire Department says in a statement that the 57-year-old man was found lying on the bottom floor of a partly demolished building Friday with "severe trauma to his abdomen."

Deputy Fire Chief Glen Hennig told the Janesville Gazette that the man was working on a beam when something came loose. He died at a Janesville hospital. The man's name hasn't been released.

The Rock River Generating System had been idle since 2010. It's scheduled to be demolished in the process of a demolition that's scheduled to be complete by the end of the year.

Alliant Energy said it will cooperate with any investigation.
