"Worst thing I've experienced:" Injured deer wanders into Piggly Wiggly store in Oconomowoc

OCONOMOWOC -- "My father always told me to carry a camera, because you never know what you will run into!"

On Friday, June 24th, Judy Hirt had her camera in hand while shopping at the Piggly Wiggly store in Oconomowoc. She captured an injured deer inside the store.

Hirt tells FOX6 News she started hearing a "loud flopping noise," and noticed the deer right behind her.

Hirt noted that the deer was disoriented and in need of help, as it was suffering from a broken leg.

Oconomowoc police got the call for this incident around 7:00 p.m. Police say the young deer broke through a window at the store and ran around the store for a short time.

Hirt said in an email to FOX6 News: "I just wanted to grab him and throw a wrap around his leg to stop his pain from the broken leg. He laid down in the liquor aisle without breaking one bottle -- nor breaking anything else in the store while I was there."

Hirt said she "just wanted to give him a big hug," and called what she saw the "worst thing I have ever experienced."

"Seeing such a beautiful animal of nature, and nothing I could do for him. Tears were flowing from many of the shoppers and workers," Hirt said.

Oconomowoc police called the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources for help corralling the deer and getting it out of the store.

Unfortunately, the deer had to be put down, as it was injured and bleeding heavily.
